Christmas
and New Year 2008
Fine weather
and a happy productive atmosphere combined to make
a memorable Christmas period on the FR.

North Wales enjoyed the best of the weather across the UK, with the unblemished blue skies and continuous sunshine from Christmas Day through to
well into the New Year. Passengers took the opportunity to view the glorious clear scenery from the heated comfort of the trains each day.

Passenger trains were hauled by a selection of Taliesin, David Lloyd George
whilst quarry Hunslet Lilla was used for other activities such as coal trains. Palmerston and Taliesin double headed a special train on 28 December for guests of other narrow gauge railways including the Talyllyn, Welshpool, Fairbourne and Vale of
Rheidol.

Lilla was used
for shunting duties on most days, thanks to an
enthusiastic team. The only shadow
cast over the week was the sad news of the death
of veteran member of staff and Boston Lodge
'resident', John Halsall.

Much was achieved
in the workshops over the new year week, including
machining of 'test' parts for the forthcoming
testing of Merddin Emrys and diesel fleet
maintenance.

Even the loco
inspection pit, engine shed, shed doors and mess
room received a winter clean.

In addition, the fine views of Cei Mawr - made
possible due to last year's clearance work - are
interesting to view. A 2007 comparison shot is
shown.

Finally, the
freezing temperatures created a beautiful and
somewhat poignant natural ice sculpture outside
the residence of the late John Halsall at Boston
Lodge. RIP John.
